How much does an AI phone answering service cost?

For a small business, an AI phone answering service typically costs $25–$300 a month: a monthly fee plus a per-minute or per-call charge. Here are the pricing models, what drives the bill, what the alternatives cost and a worked example.

A man with greying hair and a short beard, wearing a checked flannel shirt and a dark green apron, sits at a worn workbench in a bicycle repair shop at dusk, hand to his chin and pen over a sheet of paper, with a calculator and a face-down phone in front of him, under a desk lamp with bicycle wheels hanging on the wall behind

For a small business, an AI phone answering service typically costs between $25 and $300 a month. That's a monthly fee plus either a per-minute rate of roughly $0.35–$0.50 once the included minutes run out, or $1–$3 per call. A human answering service handling the same calls usually costs several times as much. Threll's smallest plan is €59 a month plus €0.35 a minute, so 300 minutes a month comes to €164. The plan you choose matters less than how many minutes the agent actually talks.

What the market charges

Most AI receptionist products for small businesses publish their prices. The entry plans look cheap, but what they include varies widely. Prices were checked on October 29, 2026.

Provider Entry plan Included After that
Upfirst $24.95/mo 30 calls $1.50/call
Dialzara $29/mo 60 min $0.48/min
Goodcall $79/mo 100 unique callers $0.79 per caller
Smith.ai AI Receptionist $0/mo (Free) 25 calls $3.00/call
Threll €59/mo none €0.35/min

So the monthly fee on its own tells you little. At 120 calls a month, Upfirst's $24.95 Starter plan comes to $159.95, more than Dialzara's $99 Business Pro plan at $135 for the same calls (300 minutes). Price every option at the same volume before comparing.

Four ways vendors charge

  • Per minute. You pay for talk time. It's easy to check against your call log, but the bill follows your volume.
  • Per call or per caller. Common for answering services. A 30-second call costs the same as a ten-minute one.
  • A bundle of included minutes. Predictable as long as you stay inside it. Anything over is billed per minute.
  • Per seat. Common for business phone systems, rare for AI agents.

Which unit works in your favor depends on who carries the risk when volume changes. We cover that in choosing the pricing unit for a voice agent.

If you'd rather build your own, developer platforms charge per minute and leave the parts to you. Vapi charges $0.05 a minute for hosting, with speech and language models passed through at cost. Retell AI quotes $0.07–$0.31 a minute for its voice agents. A Twilio US local number is $1.15 a month plus $0.0085 a minute for inbound calls. Then you pay for the engineering time it takes to make it work.

What drives the bill

Minutes. Calls per month times average length. The most important choice is which calls the agent takes. If it only answers when nobody else can, and after hours, the volume is a fraction of your full call log.

Telephony and numbers. Most businesses keep their number and forward calls to the agent when nobody picks up or after hours. Check whether the vendor charges for the number separately, and what your carrier charges for forwarding. If you bring your own SIP trunk or Twilio account, some vendors lower the per-minute rate because you pay for the phone traffic yourself. At Threll it's €0.10 a minute less.

Setup. €0 if you set it up yourself. Threll quotes €450–1,300 for setup help and from €1,300 for complex integrations.

Integrations and features. Calendar booking, lookups in your business systems and outbound calls often sit in higher tiers. At Threll, Start is inbound only with no integrations, Pluss allows two and Premium ten.

Simultaneous calls. If three people call at once, you need three free lines. Threll Start has two inbound lines, and an extra line is €4.50 a month. More on where that ceiling sits.

Commitment. Annual billing is usually cheaper in exchange for a commitment. At Threll, paying yearly gives 20 percent off for a twelve-month term, which brings Start to €47 a month. Monthly billing has no commitment.

What the alternatives cost

Voicemail. Close to free. It comes with almost every business phone line. But it only records, and many callers hang up without leaving a message. We ran the numbers on that in voicemail vs an AI answering service.

A human answering service. A live receptionist answers in your company's name and passes on a message. Smith.ai's human receptionists start at $300 a month for 30 calls, then $11.50 per call. Ruby starts at $250 a month for 50 minutes. You get a real person, but usually a message rather than a resolved request.

A part-time receptionist. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for receptionists at $18.27 an hour in 2025. Twenty hours a week is about $1,580 a month. On top of that comes the employer's 7.65 percent for Social Security and Medicare, plus benefits, desk and supervision. The full comparison, including which hours an employee actually covers, is in AI receptionist or a hire.

Worked example: a three-person plumbing company

The company lets the agent take the calls nobody can get to, and everything after 4 p.m. That's 120 calls a month at an average of 2.5 minutes, or 300 minutes.

Option Calculation Per month
Threll Start, monthly €59 + 300 min × €0.35 €164
Threll Start, yearly €47 + 300 min × €0.35 €152
Threll Pluss, monthly €219 with 500 min included €219
Dialzara Business Pro $99 with 220 min + 80 min × $0.45 $135
Smith.ai human receptionists $300 for 30 calls + 90 calls × $11.50 $1,335
Part-time receptionist 20 h/week at the median wage about $1,580 + payroll tax

At this volume, Start is the cheapest Threll plan. On monthly billing the break-even point is about 457 minutes, and above it Pluss costs less. You also need Pluss if the agent should call out or book into a calendar. Swap in the numbers from your own call log.

Ask these before you sign

  • Is usage billed per second, or rounded up to the next full minute?
  • Do you pay for calls where the caller hangs up straight away?
  • Is phone traffic included in the minute price, or billed on top?
  • What does the number cost, and what does an extra line cost?
  • What happens when included minutes run out: overage, or does the agent stop answering?
  • How long is the commitment, and what does it cost to cancel?

Threll.ai lists every price on the pricing page, and you can run a free one-week trial on your own number before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, and by a wide margin once volume grows. Live answering services tend to charge per call or per receptionist minute, at several dollars a call, while AI services charge cents per minute or a dollar or two per call. The bigger difference is what you get: a live service usually takes a message, while an AI receptionist can answer questions, book appointments and transfer the call to you.

Pull a call report from your phone provider: inbound calls per month and average call length. Count only the calls the agent will actually take, such as missed calls and after-hours calls. If the volume is uncertain, start on a plan without included minutes for the first month so you see the real number before choosing a bundle.

At Threll, a forwarded call is charged at the normal minute rate with no separate fee for the number. Your carrier may still charge for the forwarded traffic, so check your plan. Other vendors bill numbers separately, so ask before you compare.

Threll is a Nordic company and prices its English-language plans in euros. The US services compared in this article price in dollars, so convert at the current rate before comparing totals.
